Overview

  • Credit value: 15 credits at Level 7
  • Convenor: Professor Sandeep Kapur
  • Assessment: two 2-hour examinations in September (50% each)

Module description

This compulsory module is mainly for revision, as it is assumed that you have studied statistics before and are also familiar with matrix algebra.

It covers the following topics:

  • Probability and distribution theories: probability, random variables and probability distributions, expectations and moments, univariate and multi-variate distributions, functions of random variables
  • Statistical inference: sampling, large sample theory, point estimation, parametric interval estimation, tests of statistical hypotheses

The module will be taught intensively through a sequence of live online sessions, three evenings a week for four weeks in September.

Learning objectives

By the end of this module, you should be able to:

  • use matrices for algebraic manipulations
  • understand the basics of probability distributions and statistical inference.
