Module description

This module will provide you with an introduction to screenwriting.

Tutors will present film clips and short films relevant to the different topics. This is a practical class and you should come prepared to write. Writing exercises will be used in class to help you get into the habit of writing and to encourage the development of specific screenwriting skills. You will also need to work on your character profile assignment and main coursework in their own time.

You will be expected to discuss your own and each other’s work in class, in a friendly and constructive way, and the tutor will give feedback on the exercises and coursework.

Learning objectives

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • understand key dramatic elements including character, dialogue, plot, scenes, and narrative structure
  • apply these concepts to writing a short script
  • have a general understanding of the work of a screenwriter and how it fits into the process of making a film or television drama.
