The Life of the Writer

Module description

All writers have their own unique way of approaching their work. Some meticulously plan every beat in advance, others follow their nose; some work in short intense bursts, while others take many years to hone and refine a single work.

In this module you will consider the writer's process. You will receive five lectures by five leading writers in various fields. You will then research one of these writer's work and write an essay which reflects upon the relationship of their process to their work and to your own process as a writer.

Learning objectives

By the end of the module, you will have:

  • developed a reflective, critical approach to your own and established writers' working processes
  • developed a deeper understanding of how writers in different forms avail of different methods and processes to achieve their work
  • developed an understanding of the various sources of inspiration writers draw upon
  • developed a broader understanding of writers' working processes
  • gained knowledge and understanding of the contemporary literary scene
  • broadened your understanding of the context of your own writing and writing habits
  • developed your ability to think critically and independently about the work of contemporary writers.
