French 1

Overview

  • Credit value: 30 credits at Level 4

  • Assessment: two pieces of coursework (10%), a written in-class assessment (20%), written and listening in-class assessment (40%), oral in-class assessment (20%), portfolio (5%) and class participation (5%).

Module description

This 24-week module, taught at CEFR* A2 (Elementary)/GCSE level, is for complete beginners. It will give you listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in basic French, as well as improving your pronunciation and your cultural competence.

You will learn how to speak and write about:

  • yourself, your family and friends, and people in general
  • your home, neighbourhood and home town
  • your job and everyday routines
  • past events and future plans
  • climate and the environment
  • countries you have visited
  • books you have read
  • clothes and culinary tastes
  • visits to shops, restaurants and the cinema
  • your feelings.

You will also be able to:

  • give directions
  • tell the time
  • make holiday bookings
  • write a CV
  • give your opinion on French TV programmes, films, books and news items. 

Each 2.5-hour class will be conducted in French from day one, using the textbook Alter Ego 1+.

Learning objectives

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of immediate relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment)
  • communicate in tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters
  • describe in simple terms aspects of your background and immediate environment and needs.
