Overview

The Introduction to Sports Writing course will develop the skills required to produce clear and engaging sports journalism across a range of formats. Through practical workshops and writing exercises taught by an established sports journalist and Guardian columnist, you will gain expert guidance and industry insights to help develop your craft and establish yourself as a successful sports writer. 

The course will cover key elements of sports writing, such as:

  • how to write a match report
  • creating sports news stories and features
  • how to interview athletes, from grassroots participants to elite performers
  • opinion writing and analysis
  • understanding early steps for sports book publishing
  • broadcasting and podcasting
  • social media and the future of sports writing.

The Introduction to Sports Writing course will prepare you for industry, offering guidance on pitching ideas to sports editors, understanding opportunities and challenges within the industry, and exploring routes into sports journalism and other related careers. By the end of the course, you will be more confident in sports writing and will have started to develop a portfolio using best practice techniques.

This course is well suited for those with an interest in sports writing, including aspiring journalists, creative writers, bloggers and content creators, and sports enthusiasts or professionals looking to develop their writing skills. This course is intended to be suitable for enthusiasts of all sports, rather than focusing on any one sport. 

As a learner on this course, you will study alongside fellow professionals wishing to enhance their knowledge in the subject area, giving you the opportunity to make connections with like-minded colleagues and network.

You will receive a Birkbeck certificate of participation upon completion of the course.

This course is non-credit bearing, so carries no credit points.

    Most of our short courses have no formal entry requirements and are open to all students.

    This short course has no prerequisites.

    As part of the enrolment process, you may be required to submit a copy of a suitable form of ID.

    International students who wish to come to the UK to study a short course can apply for a Visitor visa. Please note that it is not possible to obtain a Student visa to study a short course.
