Overview

The Introduction to Crime Writing course will give you an understanding of what makes a great crime novel or thriller, and will support your ambitions to begin writing yourself.

Taught by a published crime writer and devised by the team behind the well-recognised MA Creative Writing, this short course will provide you with the toolkit you need to begin writing on the dark side.

The Introduction to Crime Writing course will cover the essential aspects of writing a crime novel or thriller piece, such as:

  • developing memorable characters
  • plotting a page-turner
  • writing dialogue
  • managing viewpoint and setting
  • pitching your novel concept.

Whether you are a keen beginner, or already writing but in need of some guidance, the Introduction to Crime Writing course will support you on your writing journey. By the end of the course, you should feel more confident writing your crime novel and have a better idea of how to aim for publication.

You will learn through a mix of in-class exercises, group feedback sessions and shared examples of the work of successful crime and thriller authors. Through this, you will gain an understanding of the huge breadth of the crime and thriller genre.

As a learner on this course, you will study alongside fellow creatives who wish to expand their knowledge of crime writing skills, giving you the opportunity to make valuable connections and network.

You will also receive a Birkbeck certificate of participation upon completion of the course.

This course is non-credit bearing, so carries no credit points.
