Overview

The Introduction to Writing Fiction short course will guide you through the process of writing a great work of fiction. You will explore the craft and become equipped with the tools you need to develop your own short story or novel project.  

You will attend classes in historic literary Bloomsbury and be taught by published writers. Devised by the team behind the successful MA Creative Writing, this unique introductory course will inspire you to begin writing or progress on current projects and will help you to establish your creative writing skills. 

You will look at the work of successful published authors to help inspire your creativity and develop your own storytelling skills.  

The course will cover the essential aspects of constructing a work of fiction, such as: 

  • developing a dynamic and memorable character
  • managing different viewpoints, such as first and third person
  • structuring a convincing storyline
  • writing compelling dialogue
  • pitching your ideas to industry professionals. 

You will learn through a mix of in-class exercises, group feedback sessions and examples of work from successful published writersEach session will cover a different aspect of the craft of writing fiction to stimulate and develop your creativity. 

As a learner on this course, you will study alongside fellow professionals wishing to enhance their knowledge in the subject area, giving you the opportunity to make connections with like-minded colleagues and network.

You will receive a Birkbeck certificate of participation upon completion of the course.

This course is non-credit bearing, so carries no credit points.

    Most of our short courses have no formal entry requirements and are open to all students.

    This short course has no prerequisites.

    As part of the enrolment process, you may be required to submit a copy of a suitable form of ID.

    International students who wish to come to the UK to study a short course can apply for a Visitor visa. Please note that it is not possible to obtain a Student visa to study a short course.
