Our German and Italian Fascism: History, Culture and Memory short course offers an introduction to fascism as an ideological phenomenon and the actual structures of these regimes in Germany and Italy. It will also allow you to explore cultural responses to these regimes before and after 1945 in German and Italian film and literature.

The course will be taught in English and all course material will be available in English.

We will cover:

  • Introduction: comparing German and Italian fascism
  • Fascism and propaganda
    • Thomas Mann, Mario the Magician, and Thomas Mann’s BBC broadcasts
    • Fellini (film) and film footage of Mussolini
  • Victims of fascism
    • W.G. Sebald, The Emigrants, and Ruth Klüger, Landscapes of Memory
    • Primo Levi and The Garden of… (film)
  • Resistance against and complicity with fascism
    • Marc Rothemund, Sophie Scholl (film), and Cate Shortland, Lore (film)
    • Carlo Levi, Christ Stopped at Eboli, and Rossellini film
  • Fascism and gender
    • Ingeborg Bachmann, Short Stories, and Julia Franck, Blindness of the Heart
    • Natalia Ginzburg, Family Lexicon, and Alberto Moravia, The Conformist

Assessment is via an 800-word review of a film or text discussed in class (20%), three-hour in-class examination (40%) and 2500-word essay (40%).

This can be taken as a standalone short course or as a part of:

    Entry requirements

    Most of our short courses have no formal entry requirements and are open to all students.

    This short course has no prerequisites.

    As part of the enrolment process, you may be required to submit a copy of a suitable form of ID.

    International students who wish to come to the UK to study a short course can apply for a Visitor visa. Please note that it is not possible to obtain a Student visa to study a short course.

    How to apply

    You register directly onto the classes you would like to take. Classes are filled on a first-come, first-served basis - so apply early. If you wish to take more than one short course, you can select each one separately and then register onto them together via our online application portal. There is usually no formal selection process, although some modules may have prerequisites and/or other requirements, which will be specified where relevant.
