Overview
Our Doing Languages, Cultures and Applied Linguistics short course will prepare you for effective studying in the areas of modern languages, cultures and linguistics. It will equip you with a range of study skills (e.g. attending lectures and note-taking, library skills, writing essays and commentaries, preparing for written assignments, understanding feedback, language learning skills) and introduce you to basic concepts and orientations in the study of modern languages, cultures and linguistics.
We will cover the following content:
- Introduction: studying languages, cultures and applied linguistics
- What does it mean to study literature/linguistics/visual and performative arts/film/history as part of a Languages, Cultures and Applied Linguistics course?
- What does it mean to work across cultures (including via translation) and across disciplines?
- Attending lectures and note taking
- Library skills
- Effective language learning
- Learning vocabulary in another language
- Close reading and writing a commentary
- Essay writing
- Preparing for language exams
- Preparing for written assessment
- Referencing and plagiarism
Assessment is via a 500-word writing task (5%), 800-word take-home test (30%), 1200-word essay (60%) and class attendance and participation (5%)

Most of our short courses have no formal entry requirements and are open to all students.
This short course has no prerequisites.
As part of the enrolment process, you may be required to submit a copy of a suitable form of ID.
International students who wish to come to the UK to study a short course can apply for a Visitor visa. Please note that it is not possible to obtain a Student visa to study a short course.

How to apply
How to apply
You register directly onto the classes you would like to take. Classes are filled on a first-come, first-served basis - so apply early. If you wish to take more than one short course, you can select each one separately and then register onto them together via our online application portal. There is usually no formal selection process, although some modules may have prerequisites and/or other requirements, which will be specified where relevant.
