Curating

The role of the museum or gallery curator has long expanded beyond its traditional focus on the care of objects. Today the curator is tasked with a variety of key roles, including the acquisition, interpretation and display of objects. Curators use objects to tell stories; they create exhibitions and communicate with (and shape) audiences.

This intensive curating short course takes place over five days on campus during the spring term. It will introduce you to the core aspects of curatorial practice. It encourages both critical reflection and practical engagement and allows you to consider some of the key challenges facing the profession within the museum sector today. Each morning we begin with classroom learning and follow this with visits to a range of museums and galleries across London in the afternoon.

This postgraduate-level course is an introduction to the profession. It is designed for those interested in pursuing a curatorial career or those already working in the sector and looking to advance their career by specialising in the field. This course can also count towards your Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

Assessment of this course consists of an exhibition project which includes tasks such as creating a series of short introductory wall texts, a list of key themes and objects, and a detailed room plan.
