Our Film and Politics short course examines different manifestations and articulations of the interrelationship between film and politics from the 1920s to the present day. It focuses primarily on four cultures: France, Germany, Japan and Spain. Dividing its material into a variety of themes, including film and expressionism, urban transformation, Latin American dictatorship, alienation and social class, the politics of realism, censorship and allegory and the politics of genre, the course will focus on:

  • the ways in which film can reflect on political developments both as they happen and in retrospect
  • how film can itself become a political instrument and whose purposes it can serve
  • how film can help to redefine the political.

The course will also help you to understand the relationship between individual films and the time and place of their production and to develop your film analytical skills.

Assessment is via an in-class commentary test (50%) and 2500-word essay (50%).

    Most of our short courses have no formal entry requirements and are open to all students.

    This short course has no prerequisites.

    As part of the enrolment process, you may be required to submit a copy of a suitable form of ID.

    International students who wish to come to the UK to study a short course can apply for a Visitor visa. Please note that it is not possible to obtain a Student visa to study a short course.

    How to apply

    You register directly onto the classes you would like to take. Classes are filled on a first-come, first-served basis - so apply early. If you wish to take more than one short course, you can select each one separately and then register onto them together via our online application portal. There is usually no formal selection process, although some modules may have prerequisites and/or other requirements, which will be specified where relevant.
