Overview

Please note: classes for this course run for two and a half hours from 10am to 12.30pm.

In our Japanese 4 (Level 4) short course, you will begin to express your own views on current social and cultural issues both in conversational exchange and in writing. With about 500-550 kanji acquired by the end of this course, you will be able to read a wide range of texts including written directions, instructions and reports, short essays and articles in magazines and on internet sites with the help of dictionary and other reference materials.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • sustain increasingly long conversations in a wide range of social and work situations with cultural sensitivity
  • distinguish different levels of politeness appropriately, including accurate manipulation of verb, noun and adjectival conjugations, and expressions usage
  • express your own views on current social and cultural issues in conversational exchange, and/or using an increasingly wide range of vocabulary and expressions, in pre-prepared presentations
  • comprehend various communicative exchanges of increasing complexity in a wide range of social and business situations
  • understand, with guidance, details of less complex audio-visual material (e.g. edited and/or adapted TV and radio extracts), as well as situation-specific conversation extracts approaching natural speed
  • understand a wide range of texts including written directions, instructions and reports, short essays and articles in magazines and on internet sites with the help of a dictionary and other reference materials (kanji dictionary)
  • formulate various types of texts connected with both everyday life and work situations, including short reports, formal letters, or short essays with reasonable accuracy
  • compose short presentations on set topics with an eye to delivery
  • read and write approximately 500-550 kanji.

By the end of the course, you will be working towards JLPT N3 level.* 

* Japanese Language Proficiency Test. Please note: this is only an approximate equivalence. 

Assessment is via coursework, including kanji, grammar and vocabulary tests, reading comprehension and a written composition (15%, 20% and 20%), a final examination including oral test (40%) and class participation (5%).

    You are strongly encouraged to contact us at lcal@bbk.ac.uk for a language placement test. It will then be marked by our native Japanese teachers who will confirm with you which level to enrol on. 

    You should choose this course: 

    • if you have previously taken Japanese 3 with us; or 
    • if you have previously passed JLPT N4 level, or believe that you may have reached this level.

    As part of the enrolment process, you may be required to submit a copy of a suitable form of ID.

    International students who wish to come to the UK to study a short course can apply for a Visitor visa. Please note that it is not possible to obtain a Student visa to study a short course.

    How to apply

    You register directly onto the classes you would like to take. Classes are filled on a first-come, first-served basis - so apply early. If you wish to take more than one short course, you can select each one separately and then register onto them together via our online application portal. There is usually no formal selection process, although some modules may have prerequisites and/or other requirements, which will be specified where relevant.
