At Birkbeck, our languages short courses offer a year-long study opportunity to improve and perfect your language skills and cultural knowledge.

Our languages short courses are well-suited for those with an ambition to learn new languages, those wishing to refresh their existing language skills, or striving to reach an exit level (final-year degree-level) in a second or third language. We also recommend these courses for those wishing to maintain and enhance their language skills for professional requirements or to create further opportunities in their career. Our courses are also credit bearing with formal assessments in your chosen language.

Our courses begin in October, running once each academic year. If there are no courses currently open to book, you can register your interest and we will notify you of any new course dates.

French Short Courses

Do you love the French language? We offer French short courses from beginner to advanced levels which develop written, listening and oral skills. These courses will improve and perfect your French language skills and help you to build your cultural knowledge of France.

German Short Courses

Our German short courses will improve your language skills and cultural knowledge of Germany. We offer courses across various levels, from beginner level to advanced, covering increasingly complex topics across written and spoken German.

Italian Short Courses

Our Italian courses allow you to develop your interest in the Italian language and your understanding of the diversity of cultures in the Italian-speaking world. These courses range from covering basic Italian, to focusing on accuracy and fluency of language use at intermediate and advanced levels.

Japanese Short Courses

Our Japanese courses can improve your language skills at one of five levels. There are courses for those with little to no knowledge of Japanese, as well as those that will enable you to progress to an upper-intermediate level of Japanese proficiency, and prepare you for advanced language skills.

Korean Short Courses

Our Korean language courses will improve your language skills and cultural knowledge. This is the latest addition to our languages portfolio, and we offer beginner level for those with little to no knowledge of Korean, as well as allowing you to continue to post-beginner/elementary level.

Spanish Short Courses

We offer Spanish language courses for a range of levels, starting with complete beginners and leading to advanced levels that focus on complex grammar and communication skills. You will gain awareness of every day life and the diversity of cultures in the Spanish-speaking world.
