Education and student experience

The development, planning and delivery of the College's strategic objectives for education and student experience are managed by our Education Directorate.

The Education Directorate reports to Professor Diane Houston (Pro Vice-Chancellor for Education) and works with academic colleagues, professional services and student representatives across the institution to consolidate and improve Birkbeck's teaching and learning experience, implement our Education Strategy, and monitor the success of related projects.

STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES

  • Supporting the aims of Birkbeck's corporate strategy 'Vision 2021-26' to provide high quality, flexible education through a blend of inspirational face-to-face events and modern digital learning, so that students of all backgrounds can fulfil their ambitions. Our teaching is research-led and our students benefit from learning from academic experts at the forefront of their field.
  • Leading the student engagement and success programme and providing an enhanced programme of tailored learning support and interventions designed and delivered by experienced learning development tutors to support student engagement, continuation and attainment across all student groups.
  • Working closely with the Assistant Deans for Education across our three faculties to ensure the success of our Teaching Model and the implementation of our Education Strategy.
  • Delivering an orientation and programme of learning and teaching seminars for all educators, providing access and support for formal teaching qualifications, recognising staff contributions through the Vice-Chancellor's Awards for Excellence in Learning and Teaching and supporting nominations for the Collaborative Award for Teaching Excellence (CATE) and the National Teaching Fellowship Scheme (NTFS).
  • Promoting equality and diversity through a strategy of inclusive learning, which aims to achieve higher rates of attainment across all student groups and reduce the awarding gap. Birkbeck Inclusive Learning Design supports ways to make learning more accessible and engaging for everyone.
  • Leading on Birkbeck's preparations for its Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) submission.

The Education team is led by Suzie Morris, Director of Education Strategy, and includes our Strategic Lead for the Foundation Year and First Year Student Experience, a Student Engagement and Success Lead, two Education Strategy Co-ordinators as well as our Learning Development Manager and Study Skills team.
