Multimedia and Web Authoring (Diploma), 2007/2008 entry (part-time study)



Aims

This part-time university-level professional development programme aims to develop Internet-related multimedia design and authoring skills within a business context. It is for managers, professional IT users or returners requiring professional development in designing and authoring multimedia, mainly for publishing on the Internet. Authoring tools include Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Flash and ActionScript. A strong emphasis is placed on complying with XHTML and CSS standards.

Pattern of study

Take the following eight modules:

  • Module 1: Introduction to Web Authoring using XHTML and CSS
  • Module 2: Web Authoring using Dreamweaver
  • Module 3: Developing Multimedia Assets using Fireworks and Flash
  • Module 4: JavaScript
  • Module 5: Multimedia Web Programming using Flash and ActionScript 
  • Module 6: E-Commerce Applications
  • Module 7: XML
  • Module 8: Project (Website design/authoring).

Modules can be taken in any order. They can also be taken as stand-alone courses.

Teaching

Blended learning including lectures, computer-based workshops and e-learning.

Assessment

Coursework portfolio, online testing, tutor-marked assignments.

Further study

After passing four modules, you may apply to transfer into the Foundation Degree in IT or for entry to the BSc Information Systems and Management. .


 

Module 1

Internet Communications and Websites

Learn to use HTML and CSS to author web pages that comply with usability requirements and web standards. This university-level professional development course develops basic website design and authoring skills using standards-compliant XHTML and CSS. This module also covers how to use Internet and communications technologies, introduces the programme-wide online learning management system that provides online tools: discussion boards, chat, conferencing, interactive whiteboard, email, online learning resources and quizzes. This is normally the first module taken for the Foundation Degree and Diploma programmes, but can also be studied as a short course.

Web Authoring Tools 1

Learn to use Dreamweaver to create web pages, manage the authoring process efficiently and as a tool for managing several websites. This university-level professional development course develops expertise in creating, publishing and managing professional-quality websites that comply with the web standards for XHTML, CSS and accessibility. Topics include: web authoring using stylesheets; navigation models; designing standard page layouts; improving productivity with templates and libraries and testing tools; creating accessible websites. (Prerequisites: Internet Communications and Websites, or equivalent basic web authoring skills using XHTML and CSS).

Module 3

Multimedia Assets

Learn to design, create and optimise multimedia assets (.gif images and animations, .jpg photographs, .png images, .swf and .fla Flash files) and create a multimedia website displaying them. In this university-level professional development course you use Macromedia Studio applications – Fireworks and Flash – to create a range of multimedia assets (images, audio, video), and Dreamweaver to create and manage a interactive website containing them. Topics include common image formats and standards; tools for capture, development, management and publishing (digitisation, digital cameras and scanners); browser plug-ins: Fireworks, Flash, Shockwave; web photo albums; web usability and screen design; templates, stylesheets; legal issues (copyright and IPR protection). A Dreamweaver workshop is included for those with no prior experience of using Dreamweaver. (Prerequisites: Internet Communications and Websites, or equivalent web authoring skills (XHTML and CSS), Web Authoring 1 or equivalent basic Dreamweaver authoring skills.)

Module 4

JavaScript

Learn to use JavaScript to develop dynamic web pages including forms supporting client-side validation. This university-level professional development course introduces the basic principles of object-oriented programming: objects, classes, methods, events and event handlers. Topics include JavaScript client and server-side scripting; creating popup alerts, prompts and confirm boxes; using JavaScript for validation, rollovers, e-commerce calculations, cookies, windows controls; object-based and object-oriented programming;  JavaScript programming: decision making, input and output, arithmetic, arrays, functions, built-in functions (dates, text, numbers) and simple event management. (Prerequisites: Internet Communications and Websites, or equivalent web authoring skills (XHTML and CSS), relational database design skills, preferably some knowledge of programming.)

Module 5

Multimedia Web Programming 1

Learn to use Flash and ActionScript to create multimedia effects (images, sounds, video) and Dreamweaver to create a multimedia website to display them. In this university-level professional development course you build on the basic web design and multimedia authoring skills developed in Web Authoring 1 and Multimedia Assets to develop expertise in creating interactive and multimedia-rich content for the web and learn multimedia programming skills in Flash ActionScript to create interactive web pages. (Prerequisites: Internet Communications and Websites, or equivalent web authoring skills (XHTML and CSS). Multimedia Assets, or equivalent basic Flash authoring skills. Preferably some programmimg experience.)

E-Commerce Applications

Learn about e-business models and investigate their relationship with bricks and mortar models, research the historical keys to success and failure and recent developments, specify and build an e-commerce store website and examine what is needed to develop and to maintain the concept store. This university-level professional development course is of interest to those planning or working in e-business. Topics include business models, technical issues (security, integration, availability, scalability and performance, globalisation, tools for measuring performance, mobility and location awareness), business benefits (virtual communities, auditing, costs and benefits of different e-commerce services). (Prerequisites: Internet Communications and Websites, or equivalent web authoring skills (XHTML).)

Module 7

XML

Learn to use XML for creating and managing data sources. This university-level professional development course introduces the basic principles of XML, provides hands-on practice creating XML data sources, shows how to create new tags and parse XML on a web client; shows the relationship between an XML document and a DTD; explains the concept of schema; creates an XSL stylesheet and demonstrates the role of XHTML in website publishing; uses XPath and introduces basic XML programming. (Prerequisites: Internet Communications and Websites, or equivalent web authoring skills (XHTML and CSS), relational database design skills, preferably some knowledge of programming.)

Module 8

Project

The project is an opportunity to apply professional IT or Internet skills to tackle a work-related problem for a real business customer. This university-level professional development course enables you to demonstrate competence in using a wide range of IT skills, software tools and appropriate management techniques to develop real business systems, for example creating a website, database, financial/spreadsheet model or online trading shop. This module involves individual study and can begin at any time. The project aims to confirm that you have the practical skills needed to complete a project successfully including planning and management, extracting and managing user requirements and configuration control. (Prerequisites: Completion of at least seven other Information Technology modules.)

Duration

Normally two years, but flexible study over up to four years is possible.

Attendance

Normally Saturdays (9.30am–4.30pm) or two evenings (6pm–9pm) per week.

Entry requirements

Good literacy and numeracy skills. Basic computer skills, such as the European Computer Driving Licence.
