This university-level, professional development programme provides an introduction to web design and multimedia authoring in a business environment. Its main aim is to develop knowledge, technical skills and expertise in areas affected by rapidly changing information, database and web technologies. It will be of interest to those wishing to develop professional and work-related web design and web authoring skills and learn how to apply these in commercial and not-for-profit organisations. Use is made of Adobe Creative Suite (Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Flash) and MySQL, and there is a strong emphasis on complying with XHTML and CSS standards.
What will I be studying?
To gain the Certificate of Continuing Education, you must successfully complete the following four modules, worth a total of 60 CATS points:
- Module 1: Introduction to Web Authoring using XHTML and CSS
- Module 2: Introduction to Database Technology
- Module 3: Web Authoring using Dreamweaver
- Module 4: Developing Multimedia Assets using Fireworks and Flash.
Modules should be studied in the order indicated. Modules can also be taken as stand-alone short courses.

What can I go on to do?
Students have the option of continuing their studies by completing the Certificate of Higher Education in Web Design Technologies or transferring to Year 2 of the Foundation Degree in Information Technology.
To gain the Certificate of Higher Education, you must successfully complete four additional modules, requiring a further year of part-time study (although the programme is flexible and students can take up to three years to complete their studies).
Completion of the Foundation Degree requires two further years of part-time study.
