Introduction to Counselling

This ten-week 30-hour foundational 'taster' counselling course in London is designed for those who have no previous knowledge or experience of counselling, but are keen to learn more. Introduction to Counselling will suit anyone who has a general interest in therapeutic practice, as well as those considering further study and training in the field.

You will be introduced to the core theories, aims and methods of the main counselling traditions and you will consider the role of the counsellor and the importance of the therapeutic relationship. You will also explore the idea of ethics and learn about the importance of self-awareness and reflective practice.

This course is taught via academic and experiential learning: key counselling issues are explored through both lectures and group activities.

There is no formal assessment. The course can be taken in its own right, or you can take it as a pathway into one of the other short counselling courses offered by the Department of Psychosocial Studies. It can also serve as a route onto the pre-clinical Higher Education Certificate in Psychodynamic Counselling.

This course runs on more than one occasion during the year. Please see below for details.
