Welcome to Birkbeck's School of Social Sciences, History and Philosophy

The School of Social Sciences, History and Philosophy offers an invigorating and enriching educational experience, built upon our international reputation for excellence in research and teaching. We are located in the heart of Bloomsbury in three sites: in 25-28 and 30 Russell Square, Gower Street, and 32 Tavistock Square. We also contribute to the College’s provision in Stratford in East London.

The School’s research places it among the best in the UK. We collaborate with many academic, private and public sector organisations internationally, as well as in London and other parts of the UK, and members of the School have a very high profile within their subject areas. Much of our innovative research is funded by the UK research councils and other public, private and third sector organisations. Our research feeds into high-profile events and public engagement activity, working with community groups, local government, policy institutes and many others.

In our teaching and research we strive to develop independent and critical knowledge and understanding. As the title of our School demonstrates, we are also interdisciplinary, enabling both staff and students to ask new kinds of questions, as well as draw on the most appropriate ideas and research in the pursuit of knowledge and understanding. This approach is promoted across the School, and reflected in the work of the Birkbeck Institute for Social Research, the Birkbeck Institute for Humanities and the Birkbeck Institute for Gender Studies.

Our provision is highly flexible, and we offer part-time, accelerated, work-based and blended learning options to suit all types of students. For example, our BSc Social Science offers a range of flexible pathways for those who are still making up their minds about what subject to specialize in. So, whether you are a research student wishing to work with distinguished and dedicated academics, an undergraduate looking for flexible delivery in a lively learning environment, an access student, or a life-long learner, SSHP offers you the opportunity to learn with others in the same position as you and with expert staff to support you.
