About us
The Department of Social Policy and Education was created in August 2009. We are part of the newly formed School of Social Science, History and Philosophy.
We currently have 8 permanent lecturing staff including two Professors. We also have over 40 part-time lecturers, and nine visiting Professors, covering a wide ranging academic and professional expertise.
We welcome students with no previous university experience on our specially designed introductory courses, and are generally flexible in our entrance requirements.
We offer a suite of awards in professional studies, for those wishing to build their study around their work experience. Birkbeck’s Institute of Professional Studies is headed by a member of our staff.
Our courses
We offer a series of innovative and challenging courses, which focus on contemporary social and policy issues, working across a range of disciplinary perspectives.
We offer study opportunities at all levels, from introductory Higher Education studies; Foundation and Bachelor's degrees through to postgraduate taught and PhD research courses.
In addition to the courses taught in Bloomsbury, a number of our courses are also offered on our Stratford campus in East London.
