About Birkbeck Health and Safety Services
The Health and Safety Officer is Tom McCartney and his role in Birkbeck is to:
- advise the College on how to comply with statutory requirements
- offer advice on all aspects of safety to all College staff
- where necessary, initiate enforcement of statutory and College requirements for health and safety
- act as Radiation Protection Advisor to the College
- act as Fire Officer to the College
- act as secretary to and as the executive arm of the College Safety Committee
- investigate accidents and incidents
- deliver induction safety training/information to all new staff
- deliver training sessions on a range of safety topics
- develop College safety policies and assist with school and departmental safety policies
- liaise with external bodies on health and safety matters
- assist with annual inspections of departments
- carry out audits of school and departmental safety management systems.
