The School of Science's three departments have been recognised for their educational and research excellence. Psychological Sciences were rated 5th nationally, Earth and Planetary Sciences were rated 6th and Biological Sciences were rated 11th (the last two being joint submissions with UCL) in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF).

Full academic profiles, plus details of research projects, teaching and publications, can be found under the staff sections on each department website.

The School is led by the Executive Dean, Professor Nicholas Keep and the School Executive Board. The School Manager is Rabinder Bery.

Donors, volunteers, students and staff of Birkbeck gathered at ‘An Evening of Thanks’ to celebrate contributions to college life, made possible by the generosity of benefactors.

The winner and recipient of a £500 prize was John Siblon from the Department of History, Classics and Archaeology, whose research focuses on war memory and representations of black colonial servicemen in the aftermath of the First World War.

Professor Hahn’s work has examined the interlinked areas of the process of argumentation – or making an argument which will convince a rational critic – and she has developed research interests in language and language acquisition; judgement and decision making; categorization; and how we conceive of similarity between objects in the mind.
