Free support and advice events for prospective students

If you are thinking about applying to study at Birkbeck, we run a number of free events in London throughout the year designed to help you make the right choice about your course, support you during the application process and help you get ready for university. Click on each of the headings below to find out more.

Open evenings

  • Open evenings are a great way to find out more about Birkbeck and our courses, to meet our staff and discuss your academic interests.
  • You can also meet special advisors to discuss fees, financial support packages, government loans, the application process, study skills support and disability support.
  • We hold several open evenings throughout the year and each runs from 4-7.30pm.

Information events near you

  • You can regularly find our team and information stands in local London libraries. We can give you information about our courses and show you where to find any other information that you may need about studying at Birkbeck.   • One-to-one advice for prospective students (for study in Stratford): If you would like information and advice about the Birkbeck courses on offer in Stratford and whether they are suitable for you, these advice sessions will help you. Please see our events calendar for future events.
  • Advice evenings for prospective students who are non-native speakers of English (for study in Stratford): Find out about the courses we offer for non-native speakers of English and receive advice on the most suitable course for you. Please see our events calendar for future events.
  • Starting Out at University is a series of free workshops designed to help those interested in returning to education and gaining the skills and knowledge to do so with confidence.
  • The programme consists of six two-hour workshops which take place over six weeks three times a year  at the University of East London, Stratford Campus.
  • Throughout the programme, all participants will be provided with one-to-one advice and guidance by a qualified advisor.
  • Remaining programmes this year are taking place February-March 2012 and April-May 2012 for six weeks:

    • 1 March 2012 / 10 May 2012 (10 am-12pm): Mini lecture: Birkbeck and UEL - A taste of a real university lecture
    • 8 March 2012 / 17 May 2012 (10 am-12pm): Preparing CVs and interview skills: UEL - Hints and tips on best practice
    • 15 March 2012 / 24 May 2012 (10 am-12pm): Completing applications for study: Birkbeck and UEL - Form filling and personal statements

Careers advice workshops

  • If you are thinking about studying one of our undergraduate degree courses but are not sure where to start, our free Future Focus - Careers Workshops provide an opportunity for you to consider your study options and how these may affect your future career choices.
  • A qualified careers advisor will lead discussions in small groups and by the end of the session, you will leave with a better understanding of how to choose a new career and an action plan to guarantee career success.

Making your application workshops

  • Completing your application: these free workshops will give you an overview of what Birkbeck looks for in an undergraduate degree application and will include practical writing exercises to help you write a more effective personal statement. More information and how to book a place

Preparing to Study Workshops

  • Preparing for university, including fees and  finance: This free workshop will give you the facts on tuition fees and student loans, and give you the chance to consider the potential challenges and opportunities of studying at university. More information and how to book a place.
  • Getting ready to study at Birkbeck: Once you have applied for your undergraduate course, the free Get Ahead summer programme is designed to give you a general introduction to the College and an idea of what will be expected of you on your course. We will also help you develop your academic and study skills.
