The book treats the politics of Shari'a and law in Islamic society through an examination of formative episodes of legal texts, institutions and personnel, and the contests and accommodations between scholars as the guardians of the law and political authority.
It culminates with chapters on the politics and ideology of law in recent times, especially in Egypt and in Iran after the 1979 Revolution.
