About us

Outstanding research

The Department is one of the most distinguished centres of philosophy research in the United Kingdom. In the last Research Assessment Exercise, 100% of its research was classed as being internationally recognised and 60% as internationally excellent.

Teaching quality

Our staff provide students with a philosophical education of the very highest academic quality: the department scored a maximum 24/24 in the last Teaching Quality Assessment (AQA). On the BA and MA we offer an unusually high level of small group and one-to-one tutorials, ensuring that students receive detailed comments on a significant proportion of their written work

Stimulating courses

Our courses are designed to stimulate students to think for themselves about crucial topics in philosophy and its history. By study, analysis and criticism of philosophical texts and ideas, students will be equipped to develop and hone their own ideas and argumentative skills.

Unique location

We are located in the centre of Bloomsbury within easy reach of the Birkbeck Library, the University of London Library (Senate House), and the Institute of Philosophy, and a few minutes' walk from the British Library, the Aristotelian Society and the Royal Institute of Philosophy.
