Growing appeal of Birkbeck's three year degree

Having already forged a reputation as London's evening university and establishing itself as one of the premier research-intensive institutions in the world, Birkbeck, University of London is now seeing its appeal take off as a destination for school leavers seeking to achieve personal or professional ambitions alongside work or other commitments.

The latest figures from UCAS help paint the picture of why more and more younger students are opting to study at Birkbeck on our 3-year, evening-taught undergraduate degrees. These ambitious young students recognise the value of working and studying simultaneously, all the while building their personal network with Birkbeck's diverse student population.

The introduction of 3-year full-time degrees to Birkbeck's already impressive range of study options has seen our intake experience a rapid rise, from just 119 students in the first intake a couple of years ago to nearly 1200 last year. This has also seen a sensational take up of learning by those in the 18 - 20 year old age range: an increase of some 1650% since Birkbeck first offered the 3-year alternative in 2010/11.

As the Master of Birkbeck, Professor David Latchman CBE, rightly observed: "What we are seeing is that growing numbers of 18- to 20-year-olds want more from their time at university, and our unique offer suits the spirit of the times. These focused young Londoners know that they will have the edge on their peers when they graduate from Birkbeck; they’ll not only have a University of London degree, but also be job-ready, with real work experience under their belt.

Across the College, the increasing number of courses available at undergraduate level is helping drive the growth that Birkbeck is experiencing, establishing it as a genuine competitor for first time UCAS applicants. Now, as we start 2015, the latest figures show we're already 23% up on applications from the same point last year, indicating that Birkbeck can once gain expect to welcome a record intake of undergraduates.

Birkbeck has undergone an amazing transformation since it began over 190 years ago. The number of school leavers now choosing it for their further education needs has soared, with the decision to provide 3-year full-time undergraduate degrees playing a big part in ensuring a bright future for one of the world's most unique learning institutions.
