Birkbeck Futures Ability Programme has been shortlisted for the Times Higher Education (THE) Awards 2020 in the category for Outstanding Contribution to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion.

The award recognises institutions that have built a truly inclusive environment in which all staff and students are treated fairly and with respect, and where diversity is championed, with judges looking for bold initiatives that have come to fruition during the 2018-19 academic year.

The Ability Programme supports Birkbeck students who have disabilities, neurodiverse, long-term health and mental health conditions to secure a job they are passionate about. After carrying out research into the challenges students and employers face, the Ability programme set out to help our students with disabilities to navigate the ever-changing landscape of work and connect with disability confident employers.

Through a series of tailored workshops and events alongside individual support, students developed their confidence and skills to apply for paid placements, funded by the Ian Karten Trust.

The programme also works directly with employers to design roles and make relevant adjustments for each placement, educating employers to support long term change.

Since its inception in 2018/19, the programme is continuing to work with a range of employers keen to connect with our talented students on the programme.

Lucy Crittenden, who leads the Ability Programme, said, “Being shortlisted for this award is a testament to the collaboration across Birkbeck, especially between Futures and the Disability and Dyslexia Service. We attract a much larger proportion of students with disabilities than the university sector overall, and it is brilliant to see the success that students are benefiting from through the programme so far.”

The Times Higher Education Awards final is taking place in November 2020 where winners will be revealed in a virtual awards event.
