Arts and humanities courses at Birkbeck have been ranked among the top 100 worldwide in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2016-17 by subject.

Now in their 13th year, the THE World University Rankings are considered the most comprehensive and most robust global university rankings. The 2016-2017 arts and humanities table judges world class universities across all of their core missions – teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.

Birkbeck’s 2016-2017 ranking of 70th in the world maintains the College’s position year on year as third best in London for arts & humanities, and 13th in the UK.  The College’s arts & humanities courses include the School of Arts’ literature, theatre and cultural studies programmes, history of art, languages, film and media, plus the School of Social Sciences, History and Philosophy’s archaeology, history, linguistics and philosophy programmes.

Professor Hilary Fraser, Executive Dean of the School of Arts said: “To maintain a top 100 position in the global rankings given the uncertainties of the changing national and international landscape is an excellent achievement. We’re delighted that the high quality and distinctiveness of arts and humanities at Birkbeck continues to be recognised in this way. Colleagues across the College who have contributed to our reputation for world-leading research and teaching in these fields are to be congratulated.”

The strong showing of Birkbeck’s arts & humanities courses in the THE ranking follow other significant achievements for Birkbeck in 2016. Archaeology, Classics and Linguistics were among the College courses rated top nationally in this year’s National Student Survey for overall satisfaction, while English was rated top in London for overall satisfaction. The College achieved its best-ever rankings in this year’s QS world university rankings, which placed Birkbeck 12th in the UK for citations per faculty, indicating the strength of the College’s research, up from 16th place last year.

Last week the THE World University Rankings 2016-17 placed Birkbeck within the top 250 universities in the world in its global league table.
