Beginning: new play from Birkbeck lecturer comes to the National Theatre
The play, by Lecturer in Creative Writing David Eldridge, offers an intimate look at the first fragile moments of risking your heart and taking a chance with a new person.
The latest play from David Eldridge, Lecturer in Creative Writing, will have its world premiere at the Dorfman Theatre, a venue of the National Theatre, in October.
Entitled Beginning, the play offers an intimate look at the first fragile moments of risking your heart and taking a chance with a new person. It is set in a London flat following a party at the home of one of the protagonists, Laura, and focuses on her encounter with Danny, the last guest standing.
Eldridge explained: “I’ve sensed strongly for some time that, while on the surface there are more numerous ways for us to connect and communicate than ever, for single people in their late thirties and forties London can feel a lonely place. I wanted to write about that and the courage it can to take now when you get the opportunity to connect with someone in person, rather than on Tinder or Twitter – or Facebook or Guardian Soulmates.”
Eldridge has written many plays and radio dramas and also has written for TV and film including The Scandalous Lady W, starring Natalie Dormer. He has previously won the Time Out Live Award for Under the Blue Sky, the Theatregoers Choice Award for Best New Play for Festen and the Off West End Theatre Award for The Knot of the Heart.
Beginning plays from 5 October and stars Justine Mitchell as Laura and Sam Troughton as Danny. Tickets are available from the National Theatre.
