PhD studentships in the Department of Management

The Department of Management would like to invite applications for full-time PhD studentships, starting in the academic year 2018/19.

The Department has three studentships available:

  • Two fully funded studentships covering fees at Home/EU rate, plus an annual stipend
  • One studentship covering fees only at Home/EU rate

Applications for part-time study may be considered at an appropriate pro-rata rate.

Closing date for applications: 13 May 2018

About the studentships

Fully funded awards include a fee waiver up to the value of the full-time home/EU rate for MPhil/PhD degrees in addition to an annual stipend set at Research Council rates (currently £16,553 2017/18; pro-rata in the case of a part-time award).

Fees only studentships include a fee waiver up to the value of the full-time home/EU rate for MPhil/PhD degrees only.

Studentships are awarded in spring 2018, to be taken up in October 2018/19 academic year. They will be tenable for up to 3 years (subject to the holder making satisfactory progression as assessed through the College’s regular structures for reviewing the performance of doctoral students).

The competition is primarily open to NEW home/EU and international students who are applying for a full-time MPhil/PhD place. Candidates are required to submit both a College application form for a place in the MPhil/PhD programme and a studentship application form. Candidates will be considered for admission for the MPhil/PhD first and for the award only after they have been offered a place on the programme.

Who is eligible?

We welcome applications from strong candidates who have identified an appropriate supervisor from within our department’s staff. Information about admission requirements, potential supervisors, and programme details, can be found on the Management PhD  programme page; please see in particular the area for ‘finding a supervisor’.

How to apply

Candidates must submit both a College application form for a place in the MPhil/PhD programme and a studentship application form.

Candidates will be considered for admission first and for the award only after they have been offered a place on the programme.

Before applying for a research degree, the most important aspects to consider are selecting your topic and identifying an appropriate supervisor. In order to do one of our MPhil/PhD degrees, we need to be sure that we have an academic with the experience, knowledge and expertise to supervise your topic and your proposed methodology.

Therefore, before you apply, please check our academic staff pages to see if any of them list topics and methodological approaches that relate to your area of interest. You should make informal enquiries with a potential supervisor early in your application process, to determine if there is a match between your and the supervisor’s interests, as the availability of an appropriate supervisor is one of the criteria for further consideration of any application.

Admission to the programme requires that we have all of your documentation in place; that you and your proposed supervisor have discussed your project and agreed to the supervision arrangement; and that the department’s PhD admission’s committee has considered your application and interviewed you. All of these steps take time and it is therefore prudent that you begin the application process at least two months in advance of the deadline for the studentship application.
