Management and Leadership Development
Overview
The College is committed to supporting the development of staff with people management and leadership responsibilities. We know that good management and leadership play a key role in building staff motivation, engagement and enhancing performance. These factors enable effective delivery of the College’s Mission and help to make Birkbeck a vibrant academic community and satisfying place to work. Supportive and engaging leadership is particularly crucial in this time of significant organisational change.
Learning and Organisational Development take a lead role in management development, by e.g. undertaking needs analysis, developing strategies and delivering learning activities. Schools and Professional Services’ departments also have budgets to support specific management development needs not met centrally.
Our approach
We believe that leadership and management skills are learnt and can be developed and enhanced through focused development activities. We also recognise that managers learn much from their own actions, observation of others reflection upon those experiences and discussion. We therefore incorporate experiential activities into all our learning events and encourage each participant to action plan with their manager, review and apply learning on-the-job. We have also integrated action learning and coaching more fully into our offering.
The sections below detail our provision, our plans for the future and the providers we use.
Our provision
We offer a range of development activities. The offering is informed by a number of factors including the College Strategy, College wide projects, feedback from managers and the development of a longer-term strategy to build management and leadership capability across the College. Developing our offering
Over the next few years, we will be developing our offering to people managers and leaders at all levels, in collaboration with you.
Internal delivery, collaboration and using external providers
We facilitate learning activities ourselves and collaborate with other research-intensive institutions.
We are also working with leading external experts to provide development opportunities tailored to the specific demands of a Higher Education Institution. These providers include the Leadership Foundation for Higher Education and Roffey Park.
Please call Neil O’Connor (details on our contact us page) if you have any questions about management and leadership development.
