Knowledge Unlatched Pilot Project

What is it?

“A collaborative initiative enabling open access books. Knowledge Unlatched is helping stakeholders to work together for a sustainable open future for specialist scholarly books. Our vision is a healthy market that includes free access for end users.”

  • The Knowledge Unlatched Pilot Collection of 28 Open Access e-Book monographic titles is now available covering topics in the Humanities and Social Sciences from 13 respected scholarly publishers, including Bloomsbury Academic, Brill, Cambridge, Duke, Edinburgh, Liverpool, and Manchester University presses.
  • Birkbeck College Library has joined at least 200 other institutions who have pledged an amount towards covering the publisher’s first copy costs, which results in the titles in this Pilot Collection being released as Open Access upon publication (i.e. ‘Unlatched’).

How does access work?

Titles in the Pilot Collection will be discoverable in the Directory of Open Access Books (DOAB), Worldcat, and through library discovery tools including: EBSCO EDS, Summon, and Primo.  You’ll be able to search for the titles on Birkbeck’s Library Catalogue, VuFind.

  • All the e-books in the Pilot Collection are available immediately in a fully downloadable PDF version and will be hosted and preserved by OAPEN and HathiTrust.

Knowledge Unlatched - Unlatching Round 2 - 2015

Knowledge Unlatched (KU) is delighted to inform you that it will run a second round with changes to the execution of the model as a result of feedback from libraries. This follows on from the success of the KU proof-of-concept Pilot, where it was demonstrated that global communities of monograph stakeholders are eager to work together in new ways to secure positive change for monograph markets, and an open future for long-form publications. For a full report on the Pilot, see the Downloads section on our website.

  • This second round will offer more books 76 titles from more publishers and test out the offering of small subject packages rather than a fixed bundle of books. We look forward to improving with you the working of the model.
