PGCE: Higher Education

This programme is primarily aimed at new full-time academic staff employed by Birkbeck, who need to gain a teaching qualification as part of their probation requirements.  We also welcome external candidates who are teaching in other HE contexts onto the programme.

Entry Requirements

Entry requirements for external candidates are normally a good first degree (2:1 or equivalent) and a minimum of 2 years, recent (within 4 years) teaching experience on QAA accredited HE programmes.

Acceptance on the programme also requires that candidates are teaching at least 40 hours at HE levels 4- 6/7 in the academic year of study in a role commensurate with the UKPSF level 2. Teaching must take place in the Greater London area to allow academic staff to complete an assessed teaching obvservation.

The PGCE: HE programme will run from October to June. Students take 60 credits at level 7 over one academic year, consisting of the following four modules weighted at 15 credits each:

  • Teaching Practice and Continuing Professional Development
  • Designing and Planning Learning Activities
  • Teaching and Supporting Learning
  • Assessment, Feedback and Evaluation

There will be 4 sessions per term (12 sessions in total over 3 terms). Sessions will take place on Wednesdays between 10:00am and 4:00pm.

Students must complete an assessment for each module. In addition, there is a practical assessment of teaching and learning involving teaching practice observation and assessment by course tutors and peer observations.

Successful completion allows staff to become a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
