Department of Psychological Sciences

This year, the Department has tried an experiment using Turnitin to give students some basic skills in academic referencing and an understanding of how to avoid plagiarism.

All first-year, first-term students write a 500-word essay on plagiarism and submit it to Turnitin. They are given access to their Turnitin reports and guidance on interpreting them. Each essay is then peer-marked, with each student marking one essay.  So students can see the degree to which their text matches sources within the Turnitin database, and also get some preliminary feedback from another student. This innovation is designed to rapidly equip students with some skills very early in their academic careers whilst not increasing the marking burden on staff.
