Research interests

Dr Sarah Turnbull’s research interests include gender, race, and punishment, immigration detention, deportation, the criminology of mobility, parole and community punishment, and feminist, anti-racist, and postcolonial theory.

Sarah is currently completing a research project that explores immigration detention and deportation in the United Kingdom with specific focus on issues of identity, home, and belonging. This project was generously funded by the European Research Council (ERC) under Mary Bosworth’s Starting Grant.

Sarah is also a co-investigator on the Prison Transparency Project, generously funded by a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Partnership Development Grant (2015-2017) in Canada. This three-year study aims to systematically collect and document prisoner and immigration detainee experiences in Canada across four jurisdictions (Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, and British Columbia).
