Responsibilities

Patricia Costall, B.Ed (Nottingham), MA (London), joined the School in December 2004 as Academic Support Officer.

Patricia is a qualified teacher and counsellor and has a wealth of experience in academic skills teaching and student support, both at Birkbeck and elsewhere. Her previous post was at the British School of Osteopathy, and in recent years she has taught at Queen Mary and in the Birkbeck Department of Management.

Pat is dedicated to the provision of support and advice for Law students. The ASO is there to help you, whether the problem is with your academic life, your work, your personal life, or all aspects of it!

The ASO is generally on-site across the week, during parts of the day and most evenings. As a result you will often be able to access instant help via drop-in, telephone or email contact. However, the ASO also runs an appointment system and priority is given to those with appointments, so if you do decide to simply drop-in without one you may have to wait.

The ASO is able to provide specialist advice in skills and counselling. The help she gives includes tips on writing essays, managing time, reading & note-making efficiently, giving presentations and participating in seminars.

You can make an appointment to see her on a 1:1 basis, attend one of the regular workshops for groups of students given on specific subjects, or email/phone your query in.
