Work-based learning in higher education

Welcome to the Institute of Professional Studies, which has been set up to extend and further develop work-based learning at Birkbeck.  The Institute’s innovative experience-based model of learning offers a flexible response to the needs of employers and individuals, and can be used either in the workplace or in the university as part of conventional academic courses.  The Institute works with:

• Organisations – to tailor programmes and to give academic recognition to in-house professional development

• Individuals – to offer them academic awards which can focus directly on the content of their work role

• Academic colleagues – to integrate work-based learning in a range of disciplines where appropriate
