Support and guidance for Governors, Staff and Students

The College recognises that it needs to provide appropriate support to enable its Governors, staff and students to act in accordance with the Race Equality Policy. This includes:

  • Providing and disseminating information on race relations legislation and the College's Equal Opportunities and Race Equality Policy and the implications of these with regard to the operation of the College's activities

  • Ensuring that, in addition to general information, specific guidance is provided to those responsible for carrying out effectively particular functions e.g. staff recruitment and selection, student admissions.

  • Including information on the duties under the RRAA 2000 in Governors’ induction and training

  • Providing guidance on the College's process of how to deal with any allegation of race discrimination in conjunction with the College's Equal Opportunities Policy, Staff Grievance Procedure or Student Complaint’s Procedure.

  • Providing guidance on how to undertake ethnic monitoring

  • Ensuring that staff are kept informed of any updates to race relations legislation and subsequent amendments to Birkbeck's policies

  • Reviewing associated staff development and training events and activities to ensure they embrace concepts of equality in a fair and robust way.

The Staff Development Team has responsibility for developing appropriate programmes for managers and staff in consultation with Faculties, Schools and Departments.
