Reading groups and seminars
- Research students are encouraged to organise reading groups and seminars and currently running meetings include:
- 'Theory Reading Group', open to all
- 'Early modern society' (which has included talks by Quentin Skinner, Simon Burrows, Munro Price, organised by Stephen Brogan)
- Specialist seminars at the IHR (www.history.ac.uk/ihrseminars) and ICS (www.icls.sas.ac.uk/institute/meetingslist).
Writing tutor and language classes
- The School offers the assistance of a writing tutor (Maria Margaronis – maria@thenation.com). Doctoral students who need advice about or support with any aspect of the writing of their thesis should contact her direct. Tuition is also provided in Ancient Greek and Latin. Tuition in other languages is available at the UCL language centre.
Research skills
- Training opportunities are available via the Postgraduate skills network.
- Students are encouraged to attend skills courses run at the IHR by the History Lab such as 'Explanatory paradigms: an introduction to historical theory.'

- The Department will also be providing biweekly writing workshops run by Caroline Goodson and Maria Margaronis and workshops on publishing and applying for jobs, post PhD (dates are posted on the research events list).
Research expenses
- Each research student in the department can apply for up to c.£500 over the course of the period for which they are registered, towards the cost of attending a conference, training course (including those at the Institute of Historical Research) or other necessary research expenses.
- You should discuss this with your supervisor, and apply (using the form obtainable from Sharon Durno to the Department, with an email confirming their approval from your supervisor.
- Students should also investigate other sources of funding for postgraduate research, including grants made by the Royal Historical Society.
Fieldwork
- In the case of students whose research topics oblige them to undertake significant research overseas, additional funds may also be available.
