Families of Indeterminate-Sentenced Prisoners, and the Sociology of Punishment
Speaker: Dr. Harry Annison (University of Southampton)

This paper examines the experiences of families of indeterminate-sentenced prisoners. It draws on Deleuze’s notion of society being defined by both its assemblages and its ‘lines of flight’, in order to develop an account that conceives of the experience of these individuals as finding themselves ‘trapped’ by a range of developments (which I will set out). Based on in-depth interviews with family members, we see that they feel stuck; trapped in the brambled thicket cumulatively built up by elements of the dominant assemblage. But we equally point to more positive, counter-vailing trajectories. We see, in this case, that these include meaningful and well-intentioned efforts by a range of policy participants to engage with and assist families of people serving the controversial IPP indeterminate prison sentence. In closing I examine the lessons that families’ experiences might provide about the current state of penal policy, and penal politics.
