The fevered atmosphere of the current pandemic has re-ignited a long-standing debate about the ethics of patenting pharmaceutical products. As the pharmaceutical corporations owning the COVID-19 vaccine patents make massive pay-outs to their shareholders, as the wealthy states of the West monopolize scarce supplies of medicines and vaccines, as President Joe Biden clashes with European leaders over a waiver on vaccine patents, and as the world watches the tragedy of millions of lives prematurely lost, this panel will consider the pros and cons of granting patents over pharmaceutical products.
