Birkbeck's Department of Film, Media and Cultural Studies hosts a series of annual talks with artists, curators, festival programmers and various cinema practicioners which focus on their own unique creative practice within the realm of contemporary film culture.
The evening consists of a 30-45 minute talk by Robert Ziegler, including film clips, followed by a Q&A with the audience chaired by Professor Ian Christie.
Robert Ziegler, American-born and UK-based, is one of the most versatile conductors working today, conducting symphonic and operatic repertoire as well as musical theatre, popular and contemporary music, film sessions and films with live music. He regular records music for film and television and maintains a lively career as a presenter and writer of radio programs.
Ziegler has conducted numerous original film sound tracks, from Sense & Sensibility to The Hobbit, There Will be Blood and Martin Scorsese's Hugo.
Ziegler has performed with orchestras throughout the world accompanying films with live orchestra. Screenings include Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey, the 1960's classic Planet of the Apes with Jerry Goldsmith's ground breaking 12-tone score, and the forthcoming premiere in January 2017 of Martin Scorsese's Taxi Driver with Bernard Herrmann's great score.
One of Ziegler's enduring fascinations has been commissioning and performing new scores for silent movies like Mike Westbrook's fabulous score for E. A Dupont's 1929 classic Moulin Rouge. A fruitful collaboration with the British Film Institute also created new scores for two restored Hitchcock classics: Jonathan Lloyd's score for Blackmail and Joby Talbot's for The Lodger.
