Outliers

In statistics, an 'outlier' is a point that is distant from other observations. It seems an apt way of considering the vast landscape of neglected or totally unknown films that make up British cinema, dominated by the names and reputations of a very limited group of valued directors and studio 'brands'. However, video releases have started to open up some of the unknown regions, revealing unexpected treasures, as in this selection of recent discoveries.

Stolen Face (Terence Fisher, 1952) Paul Henreid, Lizabeth Scott

Early Hammer romantic melodrama taking advantage of Hollywood stars, which looks forward to Franju's Eyes Without a Face.

London Screen Study Collection free screenings, in the Birkbeck Cinema, all at 14.00
