Two people spend an afternoon together in Vienna. They exchange memories, mostly talking past each other, occasionally meeting in moments of heightened recollection. One memory they share is of a thin, ageing, intense man who listened to them both half a century ago. That man was Sigmund Freud and the people are the subjects of two of his case studies: ‘From the history of an infantile neurosis [The Wolf Man]’ (1918) and ‘The psychogenesis of a case of homosexuality in a woman’ (1920). This beautiful film stars Paul Scofield, Maria Schell, Diana Quick, Clare Higgins and a startlingly young Colin Firth.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A between the writer-director Hugh Brody and Laura Mulvey. It has been organised by the Birkbeck Freud Reading Group, which meets monthly on Saturdays: for details of joining, email bbkfreud@gmail.com.
