The Legal Practice Conversation series aims to provide students with first-hand insight into how law works in practice and an opportunity to ask a legal practitioner about careers in law.
Julia Gasparro is a respected practitioner in the fields of family, immigration and human rights law. She specialises in children law and is one of few barristers whose expertise covers these three disciplines. She has significant expertise in care proceedings particularly those where there is an international and/or immigration issues. Recently Julia has been instructed in matters which concern the repatriation of children to relatives outside the European Union. Before qualifying as a lawyer, Julia worked with adults with either mental health and/or learning disabilities, and she has retained a strong interest in representing such vulnerable clients at court.
Julia will be talking with Daniel Monk (Professor of Law at the School of Law, Birkbeck) about her career and the day-to-day life of working as a barrister.
The conversation will also focus on a recent case in which Julia was instructed to act by the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants (JCWI). In the case the court held that the grant of asylum operated as an absolute bar to a child being returned to an alternative jurisdiction. F v M and another [2017] EWHC 949 (Fam)
