Research interests

My current research programme is based on studying modern sedimentary environments, measuring rates of sedimentation and erosion and using that information to interpret ancient sedimentary rocks.

Current areas of research include:

· Sedimentary evolution of the North Norfolk barrier island coastline in the context of Holocene sea-level change, collaborative project with Birkbeck Geography and UEA NERC Grant GST/02/0737.

· The use of ground penetrating radar in sedimentology, investigating sandbody geometry and heterogeneity, publications on Lower Greensand (Bristow 1994, 1995) and recent aeolian sediments (Bristow et al. 1996, 2000, 2005, 2007), fluvial aggradation and avulsion of Niobrara River, Nebraska with Prof F.G. Ethridge, Colorado State University.

· Sedimentology of Miocene and recent clastic sequences in the United Arab Emirates in collaboration with BGS, see Bristow 1999, Bristow and Hill 1998, and Whybrow et al. 1999.

External work and consultancy

I have undertaken consultancy and run field classes for AMOCO UK, Enterprise Oil, FINA, Mobil North Sea, Texaco, Kirkland Resources, Premier Consolidated Oil and Gas, Ready Mixed Concrete, Shell UK, Petroleum Development of Oman, PESGB, IAS and BSRG.

Antarctica is the coldest, driest and windiest continent on Earth.  In the Ice free dry valleys of Antarctica there are sand dunes.  The age and structure of the dunes are being investigated to determine how they have formed and migrated.  The internal structure of the dunes was successfully imaged using GPR in December 2006 as part of event K015

Palaeolake Megachad was the biggest freshwater lake in Africa, bigger than all the Great Lakes of North America put together (Drake and Bristow 2006).  Now it is dry, and the desiccated lake bed in the Bodele depression is the single biggest source of atmospheric dust on Earth (Washington et al.) We are studying the sediments of palaeolake megachad to investigate the history of lake flooding and desiccation and associated climate change in north Africa.  We are also studying the lake bed geomorphology, sedimentology and sedimentary geochemistry, to determine the composition of the dust that is produced and the rates of deflation. Drilling sand dunes in Namibia to obtain samples for optical dating as part of a study of the age and migration of linear dunes in the Namib Sand Sea using GPR and OSL. First results from GPR published in Nature (Bristow et al. 2000).  Integration of GPR and OSL investigation of dune migration published in the Journal of the Geological Society, London (Bristow et al. 2005).  Latest results appearing in Geology June 2007.

Age and migration of a dune using a combination of ground penetrating radar (GPR) to image dune structure and optical dating to determine the dune age (see Bristow et al. 2005). Interpretation of the GPR profile gives a relative age for the dune stratigraphy. Optical dating provides ages for calculating end point migration rates.
