Guidance for prospective MPhil/PhD students

English, theatre and creative writing applicants: We have an outstanding reputation for imaginative, critical and creative research, led by leading academics, artists, writers and playwrights.

In the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF), 75% of our research was recognised as world-leading or internationally excellent. We also achieved 100% for a research environment conducive to producing research of the highest quality.

Film, media and cultural studies applicants: Research in these subjects is both academic and practice-based, spanning arts management, cultural studies, curatorial theory and practice, digital culture, film, media and television studies, and journalism.

Birkbeck was ranked as one of the top four universities in the UK for its Art and Design research in the 2021 Research Excellence Framework.

Our research interests and themes can be broadly clustered into these research strands.

Languages, cultures and applied linguistics applicants: We bring together a cosmopolitan, enthusiastic community of scholars, researchers and students. We share interests in French-, German-, Italian- Japanese-, Portuguese- and Spanish-speaking cultures and histories, from the Renaissance to the present day.

We offer MPhil/PhD degrees in Applied Linguistics and Education. We also offer Integrated PhD degrees, which include taught modules for doctoral researchers who didn't study linguistics at master's level.
