Birkbeck runs a range of stimulating programmes for students of all levels interested in contemporary theatre.
BA Theatre Studies
Birkbeck is the only University of London College offering a part time BA in theatre studies in central London. Running over two to three evenings a week, you will have the opportunity to visit theatres, theatre museums and performances, and work with guest speakers from the theatre industry throughout your degree.

BA Creative Writing
Taught by practising published writers, this new part-time BA programme (launching in September 2010 as part of our re-launch as The Birkbeck Writing Programme (interviewing in 2009/10) introduces you to the foundations of the craft of writing in a range of literary genres. Not only will you be able to hone your skills as a writer of fiction, poetry, drama, creative non-fiction, and screenwriting, but you will also gain a critical awareness of the literary context of your own work.

MFA Theatre Directing
The Master of Fine Arts in Theatre Directing is intended to provide its students with the opportunity to acquire a practical training and education that can enable them to become professional theatre directors. It offers an integrated programme of professional practice and theoretical, critical and contextual study, allowing its students to acquire a comprehensive practice-based awareness of the work and functions of the professional theatre director under current conditions.

MA Creative Producing
The MA in Creative Producing for Theatre and Live Performance prepares students for professional roles as creative producers in a wide variety of theatre and live performance events including outdoor performance and street arts.
This specialist Programme is practice-centred and practice-based. It is firmly rooted in the present-day realities of the role of the professional creative producer, and in the essential blend of personal taste and judgement, practical skills, creative team working, and problem solving needed for that role. It is based on current industrial practice and has been planned in consultation with a wide range of industry professionals.

MA Shakespeare and Contemporary Performance
Students will study with Birkbeck’s experts in Shakespeare, theatre studies and cultural theory, and with faculty and theatre artists from Globe Education’s Courses and Research department; the course also features sessions with visiting scholars and theatre practitioners, who may include members of the Royal Shakespeare Company, Cheek by Jowl, and the National Theatre. All students will be encouraged to play an active role in the Globe Education Research department during the spring and summer terms, undertaking research projects to support the preparations for the Globe theatre season.

MA Text and Performance (with RADA)
This masters degree offers the opportunity for advanced study of theatre, text and performance. Based at Birkbeck, University of London, and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art - both world-class institutions in the heart of London – this MA brings together performance studies, creative practice, cultural theory and the detailed exploration of the dramatic text to give its students the experience of creating work and the fullest possible understanding of how theatre works now.
