What is sustainability

What is Sustainability?

Sustainability is about:

  • The longer term rather than short term fixes;
  • Enduring in the face of challenge and adversity;
  • Coping, adaptation and resilience.

Sustainability carries us into the future with some certainty.

Sustainability is not about standing firm in the face of change: Adapting to and coping with change are critical to sustainability.

Health is a crucial issue for sustainability: the health of individuals and the healthiness of their communities and work organisations and the wider context.

Sustainable Working Life

Sustainable working life is being able to maintain effective work, work organisations and working life in the face of challenge and adversity.

Health and also safety and security are central and critical considerations:

  • Protecting and promoting health and safety at work;
  • Developing individual health and safety and promoting the healthiness and security of communities and work organisations;
  • Ensuring work engagement for those who are challenged building resilient individuals and systems;
  • Providing adequate and appropriate health and care services and support;
  • Framing the above with appropriate and adequate policies and practices through the translation of research into policy and practice.

It involves not just individuals, but also their families and social groups, their communities and work organisations, their societies and cultures, and the prevailing economic, political and societal environments.
