Visiting fellowships

The Birkbeck Institute for Social Research (BISR) aims to support and connect social researchers at Birkbeck to amplify interdisciplinary, innovative and publicly engaged social research at Birkbeck and to engage with scholars and the public on issues of significant public interest, especially issues that concern the impact of social inequalities on people's lives.

The BISR welcomes applications from both established researchers and Early Career Researchers (ECRs) whose focus is relevant to the BISR mission statement, and who wish to visit Birkbeck in order to collaborate with colleagues here. We particularly welcome applications from social researchers who can connect directly with one or more of the working groups.

WHAT WE OFFER VISITING RESEARCH FELLOWS

  • BISR Visiting Research Fellows are given the opportunity to connect with leading academics in social research at Birkbeck. Working closely with the BISR manager, fellows will be supported in the organisation of lectures, seminars, and workshops designed specifically to promote and disseminate their research to BISR's academic community and beyond.
  • Visiting Fellows will be given an office space on our Bloomsbury campus, access to the College and online library, and a stipend of £1,500 for the duration of their stay.
  • Fellowships can last from a minimum of five weeks up to a maximum of one term.
  • We are able to host one Visiting Fellow at any given time.

HOW TO APPLY

  • International researchers interested in applying for a fellowship should, in the first instance, identify which members of Birkbeck staff they would like to work with during their proposed fellowship and contact them to ascertain if they are willing to support the application. 
  • Staff emails and research interests can be found on their individual departmental profiles. Each application requires at least one academic from Birkbeck to act as a nominator, and a written supporting statement from this individual.
  • Once a nominator has been agreed, applicants should  to request the relevant forms. The forms should be completed electronically and then passed on to the supporting Birkbeck staff member along with a one-page CV. 
  • The supporting staff member(s) should add their statement(s) before submitting it, along with the applicant's CV to the .
  • Applications must be submitted by your supporting Birkbeck member of staff.

BRITISH PSYCHOANALYTICAL SOCIETY/BIRKBECK FELLOWSHIP SCHEME

This scheme, which has now ended, allowed a distinguished psychoanalyst, nominated jointly by Birkbeck, University of London and the British Psychoanalytical Society, to hold a fractional appointment as a Visiting Fellow at the College.
