Working in close collaboration with the Institute of Structural and Molecular Biology, the Department is recognised for the excellence and international impact of its research.

State-of-the-art research facilities

Our labs are equipped to support research areas such as protein crystallography, cryo-electron and confocal microscopy, biophysics, microbiology, synthetic and analytical chemistry.

Flexible study

We offer courses at all levels, from certificates to PhD. We also have popular distance learning courses that students from around the world have used to develop their professional skills.

Study with us: part or full time

Birkbeck supports the needs of students who are juggling daytime work or other commitments with evening study. Most of our students study part-time in the evenings, but you can also study with us full-time.
