REF2014 research excellence

Recent REF2014 results ranked the department (joint submission with UCL) 11th in the UK based on GPA (Grade Point Average) and 4* papers (4* indicates world-leading quality research). It was also recognised as being 3rd nationally for research power.

Flexible study

We offer courses at all levels, from certificates to PhD. We also have popular distance learning courses that students from around the world have used to develop their professional skills.

Study with us: part or full time

Birkbeck supports the needs of students who are juggling daytime work or other commitments with evening study. Most of our students study part-time in the evenings, but you can also study with us full-time.

Hole-punching proteins in pathogen attack and immune defence

The way in which protein machines punch holes in cell membranes to destroy cells has been uncovered by Professor Helen Saibil’s research group at the Institute of Structural and Molecular Biology (ISMB), working in collaboration with other scientists in the UK and Australia.
